IRDAI appoints Dinesh Pant and Girija Subramanian as new members, strengthening its leadership team.

New DELHI, IRDAI: For months, two chairs at the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India’s board table sat empty, even as the regulator pushed ahead with a crowded agenda of reforms in claims settlement, distribution norms and product design. That gap has now been closed. The government has appointed Dinesh Pant, former Managing Director of the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), and Girija Subramanian, former Chairman-cum-Managing Director of New India Assurance, as members of IRDAI — bringing two veterans of India’s largest state-run insurers directly into the regulator’s decision-making core.

IRDAI: Two Veteran Insurers, Two Defined Portfolios

The appointments were cleared by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), with Pant named Member (Actuary) and Subramanian named Member (Distribution) of IRDAI. Both appointments run for five years from the date each assumes charge, or until the individual turns 65, or until further orders — whichever comes first.

The division of portfolios places each appointee’s professional background directly against their new remit. Pant’s decades at LIC, India’s largest life insurer, align with the actuarial function, while Subramanian’s tenure atop New India Assurance, a leading public-sector general insurer, feeds into her oversight of distribution — the channels, agents and intermediaries through which insurance is sold across the country.

IRDAI: Exits That Cleared the Way

The appointments followed closely on the heels of both executives’ departures from their respective companies. Pant formally ended his tenure at LIC on September 24, 2026, taking voluntary retirement to take up his new role at the regulator. LIC confirmed in a regulatory filing that he ceased to be Managing Director with effect from the close of that day. Subramanian had already completed her term at New India Assurance in July, ahead of her move to IRDAI’s board.

Their arrival addresses vacancies that had persisted at IRDAI for some time, with sources indicating the two were brought in specifically to fill these gaps in the regulator’s whole-time member roster.

IRDAI: Wider Reshuffle at the Regulator

The appointments were not made in isolation. In the same round of decisions, Deepak Sood, IRDAI’s Member (Non-Life), was granted a two-year extension effective October 27, 2026, or until he turns 65, or until further orders. Taken together, the moves point to a regulator recalibrating its board composition at a moment when it continues to press insurers on issues ranging from health claim settlement gaps to expanding parametric and climate-risk products — an agenda that will now be shaped, in part, by two officials who spent their careers running the very companies IRDAI regulates.
