Bengaluru Conrad faces an insurance-related delay after a Slovak national died in an electrocution incident at the hotel. The dispute has reportedly held up the victim's autopsy.

NEW DELHI, Bengaluru Conrad: Police in Bengaluru are waiting on formal word from the Embassy of the Slovak Republic before they carry out the post-mortem on Juraj Horvat, one of two foreign guests who died after a suspected electric shock in the swimming pool of the five-star Conrad hotel.

Horvat, 45, a project manager with IBM, had travelled to India with his wife, Silvia Hotuatova, and was staying at the hotel when the accident happened on the evening of October 30. The Halasuru police, who are handling the case, say the autopsy and the handover of the body to the family and the consulate cannot move forward until the embassy gives the go-ahead.

Bengaluru Conrad: Why the Autopsy Is on Hold

According to a senior officer, the delay has nothing to do with the police’s own paperwork. The embassy has told investigators that Horvat’s wife is currently in touch with insurance company officials in Slovakia, and the process will resume only after she receives the required clarification and the embassy passes it on.

Police had hoped to wrap up the formalities on Tuesday, but no communication arrived, and officers now say they expect to hear back on Wednesday. The situation is different for the second victim, 57-year-old German national Alexander Maximilian Theiss, a Lufthansa crew member. As the German consulate had requested, the procedures for his post-mortem have already been completed.

Bengaluru Conrad: Investigators Wait for Electrical Inspection Findings

Although the evidence so far points to electrocution in the pool, officers are cautious about declaring a final cause. They are waiting for a report from electrical inspectors, and the investigation will be concluded only after that report and the doctors’ autopsy findings are in hand. Police have also asked the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) to clarify whether the hotel’s power connection was legal and, if so, whether it was registered as commercial or domestic.

Further action will depend on these reports. The Bengaluru police commissioner has said an electrical leakage into the pool is suspected, and the Halasuru police have registered a case of alleged negligence against the hotel’s management. Hotel staff are being questioned, and their statements are being recorded.

The accident also left two other men injured. Mathew Desantis, 41, an American tourist, and Rahul Tiwari, 28, a hotel employee, were hurt while trying to help the victims, and both have since been treated and discharged from hospital. The pool, located on the hotel’s third floor, has been listed on the hotel’s website as closed for maintenance until November 30.

The hotel has said it is deeply saddened by the loss of two of its guests. Reports indicate the hotel was being used to accommodate Lufthansa crew members during their stay in the city, and a family member has alleged negligence on the part of the hotel in a police complaint. With the electrical inspection, the power connection check and the autopsy findings all still pending, the full picture of how a routine evening swim turned fatal is yet to emerge.
