HDFC Life: Shares of life and general insurance companies surged on Thursday, with gains of up to 7 percent, after reports emerged that the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) is preparing a consultation paper on insurance commissions and distribution norms. Investors bet that the move could lower commission payouts to distributors and improve profitability for insurers.
HDFC Life: IRDAI Consultation Paper Sparks Rally Across Insurance Counters
According to a CNBC-TV18 report citing sources, IRDAI is expected to issue the consultation paper soon, offering direction on how commissions are structured across the insurance distribution chain. The report indicated that the paper is unlikely to impose specific caps on commissions or expenses of management, but is expected to guide the industry toward more calibrated payouts.
Sources cited in the report said banks, which act as major distribution channels (bancassurance) for insurers, could see the steepest cuts in commission rates. Individual agents are likely to be the least affected, while group life insurance products may see a sharper reduction compared to other categories.

HDFC Life: PB Fintech Bucks the Trend, Slips on Distribution Concerns
While insurers rallied, shares of PB Fintech — which runs the online insurance marketplace Policybazaar — moved in the opposite direction, trading nearly 3 percent lower. The decline came amid concerns that changes to commission and distribution rules could weigh on the aggregator’s revenue model, which relies significantly on distribution commissions from insurers.
Market participants will now watch closely for the formal release of IRDAI’s consultation paper, which is expected to provide greater clarity on the extent and timeline of any changes to commission structures across the insurance industry.
