NEW DELHI — For millions of Indian policyholders, a rejected insurance claim or an unexplained deduction has traditionally meant an uphill fight against an insurer with far more resources and far less urgency to resolve the issue. IRDAI’s Bima Bharosa portal was built specifically to close that gap.

Bima Bharosa — the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India’s centralised, online grievance redressal system — gives consumers a single window to file complaints against insurers, agents, or brokers, and, just as importantly, to track exactly what happens to that complaint after it’s filed. It replaced the earlier Integrated Grievance Management System (IGMS), with upgrades including regional-language support and stricter, regulator-enforced turnaround times.

Bima Bharosa: Why the Portal Exists

Before Bima Bharosa, a common complaint among policyholders was not just claim rejection itself, but the opacity around it — vague reasons, no clear escalation path, and no way to know if a complaint was even being reviewed. IRDAI designed the portal to solve three specific problems: creating one centralised, industry-wide record of grievances instead of scattered insurer logs; enforcing strict turnaround times insurers must meet; and giving policyholders direct visibility and control over their own complaint, rather than relying entirely on the insurer’s internal process.

Step 1: File With the Insurer First

Every grievance is required to start at the source — the insurance company’s own grievance redressal channel. This applies to the most common categories of complaints: claim settlement disputes, delayed processing, policy servicing issues, and mis-selling.

Step 2: Wait Out the Resolution Window

Insurers are expected to respond within a defined turnaround time, commonly cited as around 15 days. If the response is vague, unsatisfactory, or simply never comes, the complaint becomes eligible for escalation to IRDAI directly.

Step 3: Register on Bima Bharosa

  • Visit the official portal and click “Register” to create an account with basic details — name, phone number, and email address. Existing users can log in directly.
  • Once logged in, go to the “Grievance” section and select “Register New Grievance.”
  • Enter the policy number, the name of the insurance company, and the category of complaint, chosen from listed options such as claim settlement issues or servicing disputes.
  • Submit the form. This generates an acknowledgment along with a unique grievance token — the reference number used for the rest of the process.

Step 4: Track the Complaint in Real Time

Using the grievance ID from the acknowledgment, policyholders can log back into the portal and check the “Track Grievance” section at any time. Status updates are also pushed via SMS and email as the complaint moves through review.

Step 5: Escalate to the Ombudsman if Needed

If the issue remains unresolved even after being logged with Bima Bharosa, it can be escalated further to the Insurance Ombudsman — a quasi-judicial authority with the power to pass binding awards against insurers. Beyond that, consumer protection forums and civil courts remain available as further recourse.

Bima Bharosa: An Option for Those Who Can’t File Online

A dedicated helpline exists for policyholders who may struggle with digital forms — particularly senior citizens. An agent can register the grievance verbally using the policy number and a description of the issue, with a confirmation token sent by SMS.

Bima Bharosa: The Scale Behind the System

In a recent financial year, the non-life insurance sector alone generated tens of thousands of complaints through the system — a volume that reflects how central Bima Bharosa has become to insurance consumer protection nationally. For IRDAI, this data also functions as a market-conduct monitoring tool, helping the regulator identify insurers or practices that warrant closer scrutiny.

Bima Bharosa: A Scam Warning Worth Repeating

IRDAI has repeatedly cautioned that Bima Bharosa never asks for payment of any kind to register or process a complaint. Policyholders are urged not to scan QR codes or click on links promising a “refund” or “disbursement” tied to a grievance — such messages are fraudulent attempts to impersonate the portal, and any request for money in this context should be treated as a red flag.

Bima Bharosa: Bottom Line

Bima Bharosa doesn’t guarantee that every disputed claim will be resolved in the policyholder’s favor, but it does guarantee that the complaint is logged, time-bound, and monitored by the regulator — a genuine paper trail instead of a dead end. For anyone stuck after exhausting their insurer’s own grievance process, registering on the portal remains the fastest, cost-free next step.
