NEW DELHI, Rajasthan Student Insurance: Rajasthan’s College Education Department has asked every government and private college in the state to make sure its students are covered by insurance, as part of the Centre’s mission to bring all citizens under life, health and general insurance by 2047. The state plans to extend the group accident policy now running at Rajasthan University to campuses across the state, with a yearly premium of Rs 100 per student.
Rajasthan Student Insurance: How the Rajasthan University model works
Under the arrangement at Rajasthan University, a Group Personal Accident policy gives each enrolled student accident cover of up to Rs 14 lakh for an annual premium of Rs 100. The policy currently protects about 24,900 students across the university and its constituent colleges.
The university has run a student accident policy since 2005. In 2018, students paid Rs 40 at enrolment for a maximum benefit of Rs 5.5 lakh, so both the premium and the cover have risen since then. A group accident policy covers injury, disability and death caused by accidents. It is not a general health or life plan.

Rajasthan Student Insurance: Colleges to collect premiums with admission fees
Sarita Saini, member secretary of the District Level Insurance Committee, said principals can collect the premium along with admission fees and then coordinate with the insurers concerned. She described Rs 14 lakh of cover for Rs 100 a year as a significant benefit at minimal cost to students.
United India Insurance Company has so far covered 5,364 students across five educational institutions in Jaipur. Several insurers are taking part in the campaign, and United India Insurance and Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance have been named lead insurers for Rajasthan.
Rajasthan Student Insurance: Part of a wider push for insurance for all by 2047
The student drive builds on a national goal, led by the insurance regulator and the Centre, of providing every citizen with insurance cover by 2047, the centenary of Independence. Parliament passed the Sabka Bima Sabki Raksha (Amendment of Insurance Laws) Act in December 2025. It raised the foreign investment limit in insurers from 74 per cent to 100 per cent. GST on individual life and health policies was also removed from September 2025.
Rajasthan has been an early test case. In February 2026, Alwar became the first district in the country to report 100 per cent insurance coverage. Door-to-door surveys found 1,367 uninsured people above the age of 10 across nine villages, and United India Insurance issued their policies. Saini said Desula village in Alwar has every resident insured and that the aim is to widen coverage gradually across the state.
In August 2026, the state’s Chief Secretary met the regulator’s chairman to discuss a roadmap for the mission. Talks covered expanding accident and life cover under the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana and the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana. The state had earlier launched the Shiksha Sanjeevani Bima Yojana in February 2025, giving Rs 1 lakh of accident cover to about 1.3 lakh government school students in the Udaipur division. Officials said it would be extended statewide.
